San Miguel De Allende, Guanajuato
San Miguel de Allende is an unbelievably gorgeous town that is not only a UNESCO world heritage site but was also voted as the best city in the world, twice in a row by Travel & Leisure. Every street looks like it came straight from a storybook.
This touristic city has a plethora of hotel options. From legendary accommodations to cute boutique Airbnb, the choices of stays are endless. But, few places make you feel at home the way Casa Safta does.
Casa Safta – San Miguel De Allende
An Airbnb in San Miguel De Allende’s Rinconada De Balcones, Casa Safta is a peaceful cosy oasis with traditional Mexican details that will make you never want to leave.
I first found Casa Safta on Airbnb in early 2020. I booked it for a weekend and fell in love with everything about the space. That’s when I made a promise to come back and stay for a longer time. And so, I did come back and never left! Well at least as of 2021, Casa Safta is what I call home.
Owned & hosted by Shantal Surving, this airy property is literally — an oasis in the desert of San Miguel De Allende. Casa Safta has three accommodation options: Savabe, The Main House & The Green Casita.
Savabe
Savabe was my home for 6 months. It’s a one-bedroom apartment with a spacious living room and kitchenette. The space is perfect for a solo traveller or a couple.
The monthly rent has been between 8000 – 10,000 Mexican pesos (400 – 500 USD). Shantal offers reduced prices for stays of a minimum of 6 months.
The Main House
Ideal for a family of 3+, this 2 room apartment is spacious and full of natural light. It also comes with its own private balcony. Traditional Mexican in design, this place is sure to give you the escape you need, both for a short-term or a longer stay.
The Green Casita
Red on the outside but calming mint green on the inside, this casita has everything you’ve ever wanted in a charming home. It comes with a fireplace to keep you hot on cold nights and a bathtub to relax you after a long day of walking around San Miguel’s centre. What’s more? A private patio with a view of a pond full of koi fishes.

Art Of Casa Safta
Shantal’s grandmother, Natalie Surving, gets all the credit for the artistic flourishes around the property.
While Natalie was sprinkling detailed pieces in the form of iguanas, dragonflies, and frogs, her husband was sculpting gorgeous female figurines.
The intricate pillars with the feminine figures and the tiles were all born out of his hard work.
Poolside Chilling
For those days when leaving the apartment feels too exhausting, there’s no better feeling than taking a dip in the pool to cool off from the desert’s heat.
Things To Do Near Casa Safta In San Miguel De Allende
The globally well-known centre of San Miguel Allende is a 20min downhill walk along breezy streets and colourful buildings. That’s where all the restaurants, cathedrals, cafes, shops, and most importantly, beautiful colonial architecture stands. If you’re like me and hate walking uphill, an Uber on the way home will set you back at about 35 Mexican pesos (1.70USD)
Charco Del Ingenio
The botanical garden of San Miguel De Allende is a stone’s throw away from Casa Safta. Full of rare faunas, a morning hike here is an ideal way to work up an appetite.
Mamma Mia Campestre
A part of the Mama Mia Chain in San Miguel De Allende, Mama Mia Campestre is the spot to relax and spend a day in the countryside restaurant ranch. You can grab a pizza and drink some handcrafted beer. It isn’t walking distance but it’s totally worth a 5$ uber from Casa Safta. There’s also an express version of Mama Mia located only a short walk from Casa Safta.
Shop & Dine At Plaza La Luciérnaga
La Luciérnaga is full of restaurants with traditional Mexican food as well as western meals, cafes, supermarket and chain departmental stores like Miniso, Liverpool, and Quarry, where you could buy everything from make-up to clothes to iPhones & home goods.
Watch The Sun Set On San Miguel De Allende
In all my weeks at Casa Safta, I have rarely missed a sunset watch. Just a 30-second walk out of the Airbnb will bring you to an open area with the most gorgeous view of the city.
Walk In The Fields | Parque Landeta
This park behind the botanical garden is where the locals come to walk their dogs. On a non-windy day, you could even have a picnic here! If you’re lucky, you could spot horses grazing on one side and the sky turning into a pink hue on the other.
Keep In Mind
- All the greenery around Casa Safta that makes it so special also brings in wildlife and insects. This Airbnb operates a non-violent pest control, which means you may spot harmless critters, birds, and small spiders around the property.
- Soriana – the nearest supermarket is a 15 min walk, but there is an OXXO 5mins away that is always stocked with supplies.
- Most of the streets of San Miguel de Allende aren’t meant for tall stilettos. Bring comfy sneakers and your feet will thank you after a long day of exploring.
